In August 1944, French resistance fighters of the Forces FranΓ§aises de l’IntΓ©rieur (FFI) launched an uprising against German occupation forces in Paris. On August 24, General Philippe Leclercβs French 2nd Armored Division entered the city with M4 Sherman tanks and other armored vehicles. German garrison commander Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered on August 25, ending four years of occupation.
