Battle Sleds – Anzio Improvised Infantry Carriers

During the 1944 Battle of Anzio (in Italy), U.S. forces used improvised “battle sleds” made from cut-down torpedo casings to tow infantry behind tanks across exposed ground. About 360 were built, reportedly invented by General John W. O’Daniel, and many were later salvaged for use during the invasion of southern France, though the system saw limited success in combat. They were used by both sides to pull supplies.
