Hiroo Onoda: Japanese Soldier Holds Out 29 Years After WWII


Lt. Hiroo Onoda, following orders never to surrender, waged guerrilla war on a Philippine island for nearly 29 years after Japan’s 1945 defeat (raiding villages and dismissing all peace reports as tricks) until March 1974, when his former commander personally relieved him. He finally surrendered with his sword and rifle intact in a dramatic handover, becoming one of the last known Japanese holdouts of World War II.
