Man rescued after 67 days at sea off Russia’s far-east Kamchatka

46-year-old Mikhail Pichugin had been drifting in a boat in the Sea of Okhotsk for 67 days with his brother and 15-year-old nephew – but by the time they were spotted, the other two had died.

They had set off on August 9 across the Sea of Okhotsk north of Japan, but contact was lost with the vessel; the search operation couldn’t find them until the boat was accidentally noticed on Monday by the crew of the ship “Angel” 23 kilometers from the shore near the village of Ust-Khairyuzovo in Kamchatka Territory.

After more than two months at sea, Mikhail had lost 50 kilograms and is being treated in hospital now.
