The Hindenburg was a German airship that caught fire and was destroyed on May 6, 1937, while attempting to dock at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey, USA. Of the 97 people on board, there were 35 fatalities, and one worker on the ground also died, making a total of 36 deaths. The disaster marked the decline of airship travel, though it led to advancements in aviation safety.
