Axis forces in North Africa surrendered in May 1943 in Tunisia, ending the campaign that began in 1940. The final surrender involved German and Italian troops after Allied offensives overwhelmed remaining positions. Total Axis losses across the campaign are commonly estimated at ~600,000–650,000 killed, wounded, or captured (with about 250,000 captured in Tunisia alone), along with heavy but variably reported losses of armor, artillery, and aircraft. The defeat cleared North Africa of Axis forces and enabled the Allied invasion of Sicily later that year.
