Ancient polar forest unearthed in Tasmania

Scientists have unearthed a trove of 53-million-year-old fossils in the Australian state, revealing a previously unknown polar forest.

The discovery includes remains of two new species of coniferous trees, along with over 400 other fossils of ferns and other plants.

These ancient forests thrived in a much warmer world than today, during the Eocene era, when global temperatures were around 27 degrees Celsius, and Australia was still connected to Antarctica.
